The ladle overhead crane (also known as a foundry overhead crane) is a specialized lifting device designed for handling and transferring molten metal. It is mainly used for charging converters with hot metal, transporting ladles to refining furnaces, and delivering ladles to the rotating table of a continuous casting machine, completing key steps in the steelmaking process. Built for the extreme conditions of smelting workshops, it is designed to withstand high temperatures, heavy dust, and exposure to molten metal. The crane typically consists of a main trolley, auxiliary trolley, bridge structure, traveling mechanisms for both the crane and trolley, a gantry hook lifting system, and an electrical control system. It can be operated via a cabin or remote control.

The ladle overhead crane is suitable for working environments ranging from -10℃ to +60℃, with a typical work duty of A7 to meet the high-frequency and heavy-load demands of the metallurgical industry. Various optional features can be integrated based on specific operational needs, such as a rotatable lifting device for enhanced flexibility, an adjustable gantry hook to accommodate different ladle sizes, and a load weighing and display system for precise control and safety monitoring.

Ladle overhead cranes come in different structural designs, including two-girder two-rail, four-girder four-rail, and four-girder six-rail configurations, to meet different capacity and operational requirements.

Two-Girder Two-Rail Ladle Crane

Suitable for medium and small capacity lifting, it is mostly used for loads of 140t or less. The bridge adopts a double-girder double-rail structure and is usually equipped with a single trolley hoisting system, featuring both main and auxiliary hoisting mechanisms.

Suitable for large-capacity lifting, it is typically used for loads of 160t or more. The bridge adopts a four-girder four-rail structure with main and auxiliary trolleys, both running on double rails. The electrical room is located inside the main girder.

  • The crane is primarily used for lifting and transporting molten metal, requiring a high-duty classification and extremely stringent safety standards.
  • A heat insulation layer is installed at the bottom of the main girder to prevent high-temperature radiation from affecting the girder’s structural integrity.
  • Both the operator’s cabin and electrical room are fully insulated, with cooling systems inside the cabin to ensure the proper functioning of operators and electrical equipment.
  • The wire rope is made of high-temperature-resistant steel-core wire rope.
  • The pulley block on the hook group or lifting device, as well as the fixed pulley group on the trolley, adopts a fully enclosed design to withstand operations in high-dust environments.
  • All motors have an insulation rating of H-class and a protection rating of IP54. Additionally, an overspeed switch is installed on the main hoisting motor to ensure that in case of a failure, the emergency brake on the drum end engages quickly.
  • Two brakes are installed at both ends of the high-speed shaft of the hoisting reducer, and a safety disc brake is mounted at one end of the drum.
  • The hoisting drum is a welded type, and most pulleys are rolling pulleys.
  • The main hoisting mechanism adopts a dual-drive system. If one motor or electrical control system fails, the other drive system ensures that the crane can complete one full work cycle at the rated load.
  • A safety monitoring system is installed on the hoisting mechanism.
  • If the rated load does not exceed 16 tons, an electric hoist can be used as the hoisting mechanism. The electric hoist must have a duty classification of no less than M6. In addition to a working brake, a safety brake is installed on the low-speed stage of the electric hoist. If the working brake fails or a transmission component breaks, the safety brake reliably holds the rated load, preventing accidents.
